CELDI-Liberia operates as a transformative force in Monrovia’s slum communities, providing underprivileged children and youth with a holistic foundation for success. At the heart of its mission is the Third Place Initiative (TPI), an after-school program modeled after the UrbanPromise method, which serves over 150 children daily. By offering academic support, Christian spiritual guidance, and nutritional help, CELDI aims to reverse high dropout rates and bridge the learning gaps that often prevent children in vulnerable neighborhoods from completing their primary education. These efforts also include an annual Summer Camp, a two-week intensive program where children find a safe environment for recreation, mentorship, and continued learning during the school break.
Beyond basic education, CELDI focuses heavily on cultivating the next generation of "servant leaders" through specialized mentorship programs tailored for junior high, high school, and college students. These programs emphasize civic engagement, ethical decision-making, and diversity of thought, preparing young people to serve and proactively transform their own communities. A standout component of their work is the Girls Empowerment Initiative, which provides a safe space for young women to learn about reproductive health and gender rights while gaining practical vocational skills. Through training in areas like entrepreneurship, pastry making, and soap production—coupled with financial literacy and micro-loan opportunities—CELDI equips these young women with the tools necessary to achieve economic independence and break the cycle of poverty.
CELDI-Liberia operates six major programs designed to provide holistic development for underprivileged children and youth in Liberia's slum communities. The Six Core Programs:
Every year, CELDI hosts a vibrant two-week Summer Camp that provides hundreds of children with a high-energy alternative to the risks of the streets during the holiday break. The camp experience includes daily meals, spiritual devotions, and structured recreation such as field trips and Christian-themed games. Beyond the fun, the camp serves as an intensive period for leadership development and character building, where children and youth are encouraged to discover their God-given talents in a supportive and joyful community atmosphere.
The CELDI After-school program provides a safe, nurturing environment for underprivileged children during the critical hours after the school day ends. Running for 10 months of the academic year, the program offers comprehensive homework assistance, nutritious lunches, and specialized classes in reading, mathematics, and the Bible. This initiative is designed to fill the educational gaps often found in substandard community schools, ensuring that students do not just pass their grades but actually master the literacy and numeracy skills necessary for lifelong success.
To combat malnutrition, this program provides healthy, balanced meals to participants three times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays) during the school year, ensuring they have the energy to focus on their studies.
This program connects individual donors with children in need, providing the financial support required for school tuition, uniforms, supplies, and nutritious after-school meals.
The program provides direct intervention in to move children from low-performing, "substandard" schools into high-quality educational institutions. For a monthly or annual commitment, sponsors cover the essential costs of tuition, uniforms, textbooks, and health care, removing the financial barriers that frequently cause children in slum communities to drop out. This program establishes a vital link between the child and a global support network, providing the stability and resources needed for them to focus entirely on their growth and academic excellence.
CELDI-Liberia’s leadership development programs is built on the foundational philosophy of Servant-Leadership—teaching young and emerging leaders that true authority is rooted in service to others. The program targets students across different academic levels—elementary, junior high, high school, and college—to instill a culture of trust, diversity of thought, and civic responsibility.
By participating in workshops and summits, participants learn to tackle social challenges with a selfless mindset, preparing them to occupy influential positions in society with integrity and a commitment to the common good.
This approach aims to equip the next generation of Liberian citizens with the ethical framework and practical skills necessary to transform their neighborhoods from the inside out.
This program utilizes high school and college students as "Student Mentors" to guide younger participants. It fosters a cycle of leadership where older youth model ethical behavior and provide academic support to their younger peers.
These mentors receive training in leadership, academic support, moral guidance, and life skills, which they then pass on to their younger peers during after-school and camp hours. This model creates a dual impact: the younger children receive relatable guidance from someone within their own community, while the mentors themselves develop professional skills, social maturity, and a deepened sense of responsibility.
This program focuses on equipping young people, particularly adolescent girls, with the tools to navigate the unique social and economic challenges they face in Liberia. The initiative provides a "safe space" for discussing gender rights, sexual and reproductive health, and decision-making to combat high rates of teenage pregnancy and abuse.
Additionally, the program offers vocational training in entrepreneurship and practical skills—such as soap making, pastry arts, and financial literacy—empowering young women to achieve financial independence and lead self-determined lives.
